To understand how your waste can be structured into categories and treatment methods in the Waste
There is much to keep track of when it's time to report waste generated within your organization. Fraction names differs between companies as there exist no standardized categorization scheme (at least in Sweden). In this article, I'll briefly describe some examples of legislation and what options there are to follow up waste in Mestro Portal.
Legislation and standards - a few examples
Since November 1st, 2020 businesses must report information on hazardous waste to the new waste registry at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. Click here to read more. The business below are covered by the requirements.
For many businesses waste is a significant environmental aspect and key figures for waste are included as a part of frameworks for sustainability reporting, such as GRESB. There is also a GRI-standard (GRI 306) for waste reporting. You can read about GRI 306 here.
This is how we do it in Mestro
The first step is to create a waste meter. You create waste meters in the same way as you create other manual meters. When the meter is created you specify which waste category that will be measured by selecting a usage type.
N:B: Today, it is only possible to follow up waste manually in Mestro Portal.
You are free to subdivide the categories offered in the Portal. Simply create multiple meters of the same usage type with different names. For example, if you want to distinguish between colored and clear glass, create two meters named Colored glass and Clear glass. Pick Glass packaging as the usage type for both meters.
Below is a list of waste categories that you can choose from when you create a meter:
-
Combustible waste
-
Landfill
-
Fillers
-
Wood
-
Soft plastic
-
Plastic packaging
-
Scrap and metal
-
Mixed waste
-
Bulky waste
-
Electric waste
-
Hazardous waste
-
Metal packaging
-
Glass packaging
-
Newspapers and recycled paper
-
Paper packaging
Treatment methods
You have the option of choosing a treatment method each waste meter. The treatment method describes how your waste is handled by the waste company. This information is relevant in sustainability reporting. For example, by tagging diligently the system will automatically calculate the proportion of waste that is recycled.
TIP: Treatment methods differ between waste companies. Contact your supplier for information.
The following treatment methods are available in the portal:
-
Re-use
-
Material recycling
-
Landfill
-
Combustion
-
Deep storage
-
Other
Treatment method is selected when you create the waste meter or in the Edit tab. The options differ between usage types.
