How much greenhouse gas emissions is my energy usage causing? The answer can be found in the "Emissions" report
Energy production contributes to emissions of greenhouse gasses in different scales. Mestro's report "Emissions" presents emissions of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO₂e) caused by your energy usage, which makes it easier when, for example, you have to report your organization's climate impact. If you have chosen to register uncategorized emissions, you will see that here as well.
You can choose to have the emission calculations based on Mestro's standardized emission data or you can choose to add emission factors from your own energy agreement with your utility company. Maestro’s standardized emission data is based on the statistics from the Energy Companies' annual compilation for district heating.
Do the following:
- Make sure you are in the right place in the node tree. Do you want to see the emissions for a property group, an individual property or your entire portfolio? Where you stand in the node tree will determine which emissions you see. Then click on the "Emissions" report.
- Do you want to see your emissions for a quarter, a month or a whole year? Select the period for the emissions you want to see by clicking on "period".
- How do you want your emissions to be visualized? You set this in the report settings, which you open by clicking on the cogwheel on the top right of the screen. I recommend that you also "pin settings" to the layout. That way you’ll have a convenient overview of what actually appears in the report with the different types of calculations and reference periods.
PRO TIP: The report will be extra useful if you fill in this information:
- Areas (sqm-type): Make sure that all properties and buildings have the same areas (i.e Gross leasing area) filled in to produce key figures for emissions/square meter (CO₂e /m2). This is done in Edit on each property.
- Area of use: You can distinguish between tenant and property energy by filling in the information on each respective meter. Read more here.
- Review key figures and baseline years. Perhaps you are interested in seeing emissions per apartment or heated volume? (Activated in the edit mode of the customer account).
- Divide by use - the report settings have a toggle to see key figures of emissions/energy unit (CO₂e /kWh) in the relevant report
How to read and interpret the Emissions report
The Emissions report works similar to the usage report in the way it is structured and visualized. Such as the bar graphs, the usage of one or two reference yeras to compare the data as well as the downloadable table.
Here are some to keep in mind about the emissions report:
- If you are trying to divide your emission by sqm, you must first make sure you have the desired m2-value put in on the property. Note that you cannot divide by sqm if you are looking at emissions on a meter only.
- If you are missing energydata from which emissions are being calculated the report will show 0 in value.
- If you don’t have specific emission factors put in for each energy type (heating, electricity, cooling…) You can choose to have Mestro’s generic emission factors. Note that the generic factors are based on statistics from Swedish utility companies. To set up your own emission factors, please contact your CSM or support@mestro.com
Bonus:
You can see both the emissions linked to the production of the energy (Scope 2) as well as the production and transport of the fuel (scope 3) if you:
- scroll down to the table view of the emission report
- click on the small arrow to the right of any given month
- click on the respective contract item
Now that you have dived into your climate emissions, you might also be interested in the costs linked to your energy use. If you want to know more about setting up your usage costs contact your CSM or support@mestro.com
